Jayne Wierzbicki of Wilmington Collects Second NECC Rookie of the Week Honor

2017 Oct 17

Southern Vermont College freshman Jayne Wierzbicki (Wilmington, Mass.) has collected her second New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week laurel as she picked up the award for the period ending October 15, 2017 as announced by the league on Monday.

Wierzbicki played a huge part in SVC's stellar week as she tallied five points through the Mountaineers' two games. The Southern Vermont freshman started it with a pair of goals at Mitchell College on Monday to help the team tie its program record of most-consecutive wins (6 - 1996). She then played a perfect pass to set up a goal by sophomore teammate Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) during the Mountaineers' 1-1 tie against Elms College on Saturday; that draw with EC tied SVC's streak for the most consecutive games without a loss (7- 1996) and was the first of 11 all-time meetings with the Blazers in which Southern Vermont did not lose to Elms.

Monday's honor is the Mountaineers' fourth NECC Rookie of the Week accolade this season; Wierzbicki had previously collected the award on October 2.

SVC was decorated with both of the league's women's soccer weekly honors as senior keeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) was also tabbed the NECC Player of the Week on Monday. She allowed only one goal in 200 minutes of NECC action-recording five saves per game. The Southern Vermont keeper turned away two EC shots in overtime on Saturday to total seven stops on the day.
