Jayne Wierzbicki of Wilmington Honored as NECC Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week

2017 Oct 9

Southern Vermont College freshman Jayne Wierzbicki (Wilmington, Mass.) was named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week for the period ending October 1, 2017 as announced by the league last Monday.

Wierzbicki had a stellar week for SVC as she notched four goals in two games. She scored the eventual game winner in both of Southern Vermont's victories before adding insurance tallies in each of the Mountaineers' wins.

The SVC rookie took a throw in on the right side of the field and fired a shot across the frame and into the left side of the cage in the 30th minute of the Mountaineers' 3-0 win against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Tuesday, September 26; she would then go on to pad Southern Vermont's cushion in the 71st minute of the match with a lobbed shot from the right side of the box.

On Saturday, September 30, Wierzbicki scored the first two goals of the Mountaineers' 3-0 NECC shutout at Newbury College. She wasted little time in giving the visitors a lead as she found the back of the net in the eighth minute of play. 3:21 later, she notched her team-leading sixth goal of the year to give SVC some breathing room.

Wierzbicki is the second Mountaineer to collect the league's rookie honor this year after classmate Rileigh Griffiths (Milford, N.Y.) picked it up September 18.

Wierzbicki and the Southern Vermont squad are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Morrisville State College for a 3 p.m. non-conference kickoff.
